Thursday, March 31 at 7:30 pm

An auxiliary event of Sick Fest, SICK / TENDER / HAUNTED is an intimate conversation exploring the sick body and its identity under capitalism. Writers and artists Johanna Hedva (Sick Woman Theory), Amy Berkowitz (Tender Points), and Catherine Czacki (Ghost Gives) will give short readings followed by a conversation about the shared themes of their work and an informal discussion that prioritizes audience participation.

Amy Berkowitz is the author of Tender Points, a lyric essay about sexual violence, gendered illness, chronic pain, and patriarchy published by Oakland small press Timeless, Infinite Light. She’s the editor of Mondo Bummer Books and the host of the Amy’s Kitchen Organics reading series, and she was a 2014 Writer in Residence at Alley Cat Bookstore & Gallery. Her writing has appeared in Dusie, Textsound, VIDA, and Uprooted: An Anthology on Gender and Illness, among other places. She lives in a rent-controlled apartment in San Francisco.

Catherine Czacki (b. 1980, Bristol, PA) lives and works in San Diego, California. Czacki received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute (2003), her MFA from Columbia University (2008) and is currently a PhD candidate in the Art History, Theory and Criticism program (Concentration in Art Practice)—at the University of California, San Diego. Czacki’s work has been exhibited at The Prague Bienniale (2009); DREI Raum für Gegenwartskunst in Köln, Germany (2009); Art in General in New York, New York (2011); Favorite Goods in Los Angeles, California (2013 / 2014); JOAN in Los Angeles, California (2015); The Range in Saguache, Colorado (2015) and Sculpture Center in Long Island City, New York (2015).

Johanna Hedva is a fourth-generation Los Angelena on her mother’s side, and, on her father’s side, the granddaughter of a woman who escaped from North Korea. Her Moon’s in Cancer in the 8th House, Mars in Scorpio in the 12th, and, as of this writing, she has been attached to a grand total of seven ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases), all of them deemed “incurable.” She makes novels, plays, performances, poetry, myth, autohagiography, and theory, which take the forms of books and texts, images still or moving, events with other people, singular moments in time, and/or as visual documents. Her work is only the document of practice, and the document is never more important than practice.
